Yes, apparently I am INFECTED. “Infected”, you ask? Why, yes I was infected with the TRAVEL BUG! It started when I first traveled to Bali, Indonesia while I was living in Japan from 2002-2004. I had traveled back and forth to Japan for family reasons before that, but Bali was the first international country besides Japan that I had no prior knowledge about!  The first morning in Bali, I woke up early as to not disturb my two traveling companions Gina and Rieko. I propped up my feet on our balcony wearing socks and sandals. I stared at a Indonesian cow walking around in a circle because it had a rope on its neck and it was tied to a stake. I heard chickens crowing in the background and everything that I was looking at was SO FOREIGN and SO FASCINATING!

I couldn’t help myself. I was waiting for the first Indonesian person to walk by so I could yell out “Pagi Pagi” which means good morning. At the very moment that I yelled out “Pagi Pagi”, the bug infected me and I have been traveling since! I long to go back to Bali and it is definitely on my bucket list.

I have lived in Japan for two years and have seen some interesting things that I cannot possibly explain unless I was sitting down with you explaining some of the crazy stories in detail over a cup of tea or coffee. The phrase that best captures some of the stories in Japan is “Only in Japan”.

  1. Your blog seems really interesting and I will be back to read more! I lived in Japan too, and am South African, now living in Barcelona! Seems the travel bug got me too!

    • Glad the “bug” got you! I have learned so much about food, culture, history and myself through travels. I got a chance to look at your blog and I will definitely be following your stories and travels! Cheers!

  2. What a great site. I was drawn to it through your Historical Game Project ideas. I am currently considering such a project myself but I love what your kids did. Could you send me the rubric you gave them?

    • Hi Jeff,

Wish it was just easy for me to send you a rubric, but it is only a hardcopy. Check out http://rubistar.4teachers.org/ for easy and quick rubrics. Tailor the rubric to your needs and see what works out. Thanks for asking. I’ll see if I can post one up there in the near future. Just too busy at the moment to scan it.

  3. Love your blog! Found it through googling solo travel Spain. I also live in LA (Santa Monica) and am planning 3 weeks in Spain this October. Would love to get some hotel tips from you and more info about B&B Abracadabra. I’ve never been to Spain, so any tips I can get are very welcome. (P.S. Left you a tip on your Colombe d’Or page.) Pat

  4. Hi,

My name is KC Owens; I’m a college student who loves to travel! While cruising the Internet, I found your site and really enjoyed reading your posts. Personally, I think traveling is a necessary part of life as you’re exposed to all sorts of new cultures and experiences. While enjoying time abroad, I’ve found it’s crucial to fully understand the dangers that you might encounter along the way. These mishaps are part of life and certainly part of travel but it’s always a great idea to take preventive measures to help ensure your safety while abroad.

I was hoping that you would allow me to write a post for your site to share my travel safety tips with your readers? I put a lot of time and passion into my traveling and I would love to help others by offering safety advice as a result of the mistakes and triumphs I’ve had. I look forward to hearing from you!
